Jobs with Environmental NGOs in China

Submitted by xing on May 22, 2009 – 3:45 pmOne Comment

According to the China Environmental NGO Blue book released in 2008, 28.9% of all known environmental NGOs in China do not have professional employees, and 46.5% of the group have less than 5 employees.  To help meet the challenge of talent shortage for environmental NGOs, and also to help the increasing number of professionals interested in environmental issues to find opportunities to work with environmental NGOs in China,  China Environemental NGO Online established an online job portal for environmental NGOs in China. : job.greengo.cn.

To “marketing” this newly-founded platform, the oldest environmental NGO in China, “Friends of Nature” (FON) held a salon in June at Beijing Forestry University: The Job-Hunting of Graduates and NGO.

The themes covered the property of a job with NGOs, what the university graduates can do with NGOs, analysis of employment prospect with companies, the government and NGOs, how to make full use of this platform, etc. Through the talk, one piece of information was successfully sent out that there is an extra choice for the university graduates in search for employment: the philanthropy industry.

FON has been working over a decade to promote environmental awareness towards China’s most pressing environmental problems and Po Li, the president of FON believes that increased participation of citizens will foster a growing network of grassroots environmental NGOs. Speakers on the salon were from FON, Hinature (山水自然保护中心) and Peter F. Drucker Academy of Management. The NPI, SEE, CNature Conservation Association, Greenpeace, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Beijing Brooks Education Center, Roots&Shoots, Hinature (山水自然保护中心) and Peter F. Drucker Academy of Management. The NPI, SEE, CNature Conservation Association, Greenpeace, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Beijing Brooks Education Center, Roots&Shoots, Global Environmental Institute (GEI) were the co-organizers. Moreover, China Central Television (CCTV) and Guangming Daily attended the salon as the representatives of media and reported this event.

    Hello / 你好,
My name is Gregory McGovern and and I am looking for an opportunity to establish a career with an environmental NGO in China. I am a Canadian citizen and resident. I have an academic background in environmental geography and I am working on my second degree in Urban Planning. I’m aiming to apply these skills in China for the fact that this country is one of the fastest developing economies in the world. I’m just beginning my employment search and I need to be connected with some decent employment resources. Unfortunately I do not speak Mandarin so I will have great difficulty using a job placement website that does not translate to English.
I need to learn the best way to contact with potential employers and I appreciate any advice you can lend me,

Please let me know if I can provide any extra information,

Thank you very much / 谢谢,

    Gregory
