Welcome to the blog of nonprofits in China!

WHY

Year 2008 has been termed as the First Year of the Philanthropic China in the Chinese media.

The catastrophic earthquake and the Olympic Games in Beijing triggered the outburst of public philanthropic awareness and actions. The government responded with positive reforms and policies.

It  seems now more than ever that understanding the social organizations (as the Chinese official term for the nonprofit organizations) in China, their roles and impacts to the Chinese society, has become an unavoidable topic for most social science scholars on China, and on the nonprofit sector in general.

WHAT

This blog aims to provide a glimpse into the vast and fast evolving nonprofit sector in China in English for scholars and practitioners outside of China.

In choosing stories, we try to respond to the following popular  hypothesis:

  • China does not have real grassroots nonprofit organizations.
  • China does not have a citizen sector, or civil spaces.
  • Chinese government is wary of and generally suppressive of the citizen sector initiatives.
  • International organizations in China does not have the true basis in the Chinese society, either in terms of relating to the government or to the public.
