This is a portal to web resources of  major research centers on nonprofit sector in China, and major Chinese scholars who have published on the subject of nonprofits, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and social policies in China.

Research Centers and Institutes

Tsinghua University NGO Research Center Established in October 1998. The mission is train high level management personnel for NGOs, promote theoretical research of NGOs in China, promote scientific policy making in this field, and help with capacity training of the NGO practitioners.

Peking University Center for Civil Society Studies

Sun Yat-sen University Institute for Civil Society (ICS) formerly known as South China Research Centre for Non-Governmental Organizations, is a non-profit organization engaged in research, experiment and advocacy. ICS was jointly created by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and SYSU in August 2003 and operates under SYSU’s Department of Anthropology.

Zhejiang University Institute of Civil Society Development: Established in September,2006, focusing on the study and promotion of the development of civil society in China. The Yangtze River Delta in which Zhejiang province lies is the most developed area of private economy in China. With the boosting of the private economy in this area a variety of NGOs including trade associations emerged and played a rising important role in the modernization of the economy and society. The boom of the industrial associations as thus becomes a significant phenomenon in Yangtze River Delta and Zhejiang province especially and presents unique characteristics of its organizational structure and function in the contexts of the transaction of China.

Remin University NPO Research Center The Founding and current Director of the Center is Professor Kang Xiaoguang who is a prominent researcher in areas of the third sector, state-society relationship.  Functions are: Research: theoretical studies in NPOs, particularly in the analysis and development of domestic experiences, including the state policies and institutions governing the NPOs, strategic framework of NPO-state cooperation, government contracting of NPO services, as well as the legal environment for the NPOs, etc. Talent cultivation and teaching.  Policy consultation: the research staff at the Center have been engaged in projects sponsored by the central and local governments many times
