Forum on
Philanthropy and Social Innovation in China, Beijing
2009
At the invitation of Sun Culture
Foundation and Peking University in China, Christopher
Stone and David Brown both spoke at the Forum on
Philanthropy and Social Innovation in China on January 15,
2009. Professor Stone also met with a number of press to
talk about Hauser Center, and the mission of the joint
program on capacity building for China's nonprofit
organizations (NPOs).
The press release of the forum emphasized China's need for
capacity building for its NPOs, by quoting the founding
director of the Center for Civil Society Studies of Peking
University, Professor Li Jingpeng. It then introduced the
joint training workshop between PKU and Hauser Center: "It
was for the purposes of enhancing the management capacity
and sustainability of philanthropic organizations of China
to go with the rising enthusiasm for philanthropy of the
Chinese public, Sun Culture Foundation facilitated the
long-term partnership between Peking University and Harvard
University. They will carry out intensive training twice a
year, using case studies and results of academic research,
to help executives in the philanthropic sector improve
their understandings, and learn specific management skills
of fundraising and project operations... Through the case
study method, and by exposing advanced learning institutes
to real cases from the workshop participants, this joint
training program has filled the void in advanced thinking
in the field of philanthropy (in China)."
Sina.com, a major Chinese portal website,
created a special site to cover the entire event. For
full coverage see this article (in Chinese). This news release was
widely distributed by China's two major news agencies,
the Xinhua News Agency, and China News Agency, and was
then adopted by some influential Chinese media,
including the People's Daily website.
