Strategic Management for Leaders of Non-Governmental Organizations

This program is designed and taught by Harvard faculty and researchers and
offered in Athens, Greece, in collaboration with the Kokkalis Foundation and the Middle East Initiative at Harvard. The program is designed to give NGO leaders from Southeastern and Eastern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East the tools, perspectives, and frameworks needed to strengthen their organizations, engage constituent communities, and cultivate long-term partnerships and commitments. Performance Measurement for Effective Management of Nonprofit Organizations
Developed jointly by Harvard Business School’s Social Enterprise Initiative and Harvard University’s Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations.

This program is designed to show nonprofit leaders how to use performance measurement to enhance the effectiveness of their organization. The program covers a range of approaches that address the specific performance challenges facing executives in the nonprofit world. The program is designed for senior executives and other leaders of nonprofit organizations around the world who are committed to implementing effective performance measurement and management in their organizations. Community Problem-Solving:  Skills for Civic Leadership
This program teaches teams of community leaders the skills they need to effect deep change. Community Problem-Solving is for key decision makers from community-based organizations, public agencies, faith-based organizations, elected offices, and businesses – including board members, CEOs, outreach and advocacy directors, and corporate social responsibility liaisons. Participants will learn both practical skills and theoretical frameworks that will strengthen their ability to exercise effective civic leadership together. Strategic Frameworks for Nonprofit/Nongovernmental Organizations
This is a 10-week distance learning program for leaders of nonprofits and NGOs in the developing world.  The program consists of five (5) two-week modules on topics including strategy frameworks, mission statements, portfolio management, marketing, and strategic positioning.  Participants will apply concepts developed at the Kennedy School to challenges facing their individual organizations using electronic workbooks and moderated discussion boards where they will share their experiences and gain insights from other leaders around the globe.  Each two-week module will culminate in a live discussion with faculty chair Christine Letts.  For more information visit the program website.

Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management
In a time of shifting demands for services, changing operating environments, and recurring financial pressures, the skills of nonprofit leaders are put to the test. SPNM, a joint program with the Social Enterprise Initiative, provides executives with the opportunity to examine their missions and develop new strategies. The program guides nonprofit leaders as they explore proactive methods for mastering nonprofit leadership. HBS faculty and colleagues challenge participants to strengthen their ability to improve the effectiveness of their organizations. Designed for executives responsible for organization direction, mission, policies, and major programs, SPNM is suitable for leaders of public-serving nonprofits. It is not targeted at industry/trade associations, management support organizations, or consulting firms.

Governing for Nonprofit Excellence: Critical Issues for Board Leadership
Nonprofit organizations require strong, innovative leadership. This program is designed to maximize the contributions of individual nonprofit board members. Participants are challenged to examine their role and the role of their boards in improving organizational effectiveness. By examining issues of critical concern to board leaders, the program prepares participants for strategic planning and organizational transformation. Board members gain skills needed to forge effective relationships with CEOs, structure and manage important alliances and achieve financial sustainability. Designed for nonprofit board members assuming board leadership roles, the program meets the needs of leaders from a variety of organizations, such as those focused on social services, education, healthcare, arts and culture, community and economic development, and international development.
