Urban Scholars

Christopher Winship (Harvard) and Mario L. Small (University of Chicago), are convening scholars from around the country to examine the relationship between non-profit organizations and different aspects of urban inequality. This group, composed of sociologists, political scientists, and economists, seeks to unpack the role that such organizations play in social networks, migration patterns, immigration, welfare use, housing and gentrification, and politics and governance. In fact, they seek to explore the very relevance of the concept of "the non-profit organization," at a time when, particularly in urban contexts, complex arrangements among private and public, for- and non-profit groups within singular organizational structures appear to be increasingly common.
